I definitely have BIRTHDAYS on my mind this month! So I figured it would be fun to talk about birthdays and why I consider celebrating your birthday an act of self care.

Let’s talk about birthdays! Do you love them? Or hate them? Or are they just another day?

I find that many people don’t really care to celebrate their birthday or even acknowledge that it happens. I’ve never really understood that. I’ve always found my birthday to be a day—Oh, who am I kidding: it’s Birthday Month around here!—to celebrate and enjoy!

If birthdays aren’t your thing, grab yourself a cup of coffee (and put it in a birthday mug), and keep reading. Maybe something here will change your mind!

Is celebrating your birthday really an act of self care? Of course it is! What could be important than acknowledging (and celebrating) the day you entered this world?!

Let’s chat a little bit about why you should celebrate your birthday:

Your birthday is a great time to reflect on the past year and make plans for the future. Many people use January 1st as the time for reflection and making plans. There’s nothing wrong with that! But your birthday might be an even better time for it. We all tend to get a little reminiscent on our birthday (even those that don’t celebrate), so use that time to figure out what’s working for you and what changes you might want to make.

Celebrating a birthday can be even more special when you connect with friends and family. I understand that it might be hard, if you are missing loved ones in your life. But use your birthday to connect with those loved ones that are still around! In person, by phone, via Zoom or FaceTime! Celebrate with the people you love while honoring those that have gone.

Your birthday is the one day of the year that’s all about YOU! Do what makes you happy!!! I’m not a party person, so having a birthday party wouldn’t be much fun for me. But that might be tons of fun for someone else! The point is: figure out what would make you happiest and do that!

Schedule in some “fancy” self care. Once a year on your birthday, splurge for a relaxing massage. Go get a mani/pedi. Go out to dinner at your favorite restaurant. Treat yourself to a yummy coffee!  (Do some research, because you can actually get a lot of free food/drinks on your birthday!)

Eat the cake/pie/cheesecake/cupcake/ice cream…it’s your birthday and it’s ONE day! Don’t restrict yourself! You can go back to healthy eating tomorrow. Just enjoy yourself today!

And hey! If nothing else, it’s time to celebrate that you’ve made it another year!!!

I hope that every birthday you have is a special one! And hope that you take the day (or month) to really celebrate! You deserve to be loved, pampered and celebrated!
